 What is Rooted and Reaching?

As a church committed to boldly raising up discipleship as the mission of the church, our roots create reach

As a church committed to establishing hearts rooted in the heart of God, we bear responsibility to help Sycamore View members grow, develop, and mature in their faith in Christ. 

As a church committed to Memphis, our roots go deep at 1910 Sycamore View Rd. Our campus functions as a place of worship and a community hub. 

With roots that continue to grow deeper, our reach has purpose, meaning, and life.

As we approach our 50th Anniversary in 2028, we’re reflecting on our past and anticipating our future. We see the fruit of hard decisions that helped our roots go deep at 1910. We see the reach of our presence through the relationships we formed with our neighbors. We see the potential we have as a church and community to be rooted even deeper and reaching even farther. Our roots continue to go deep in our location, and with our commitment in our location, our reach in our city continues to grow and bear fruit.

We’ve been helping people see Jesus at 1910 since 1978, and we remain committed to our mission, to growing deeper roots, and to reaching the world. 

Rooted in Christ.

Reaching the world for Him.

 Sycamore View is turning 50!

In 2028, Sycamore View Church will turn 50 years old, and we want to use this milestone to reflect well. The Hebrew word Zakar gives us some context to this — we want to remember the past in a way that brings us awareness of what our future can be. Instead of holding on to the past, we want to use our reflecting to propel us into the future. Over the next four years, we will be looking at Sycamore View’s history to see how we can grow into a brighter future.

We’ve already begun preparing for this effort. For a year and half now, church leaders have met with over 225 people in our church family to share stories of the past — stories that are the DNA of who we are as a church. The consensus of those conversations was this:

We are committed to young people.

We are not afraid to take risks.

We are service-oriented.

We are welcoming and open-minded.

No church is perfect. These conversations raised some challenges for us to step into:

As we disciple young people, are we being intentional in keeping them connected to church and to God after the age of 18?

How are we connecting people in different age groups and ethnicities?

How can we update our campus so that it lasts and continues to be a community hub?

The next step after this surveying period was obvious: We needed to build committees to help us answer these questions and provide solutions.

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!
